Restoring the Collins 180S-1

Next on the bench, a Collins 180S-1 antenna tuner found its place.

A friend of mine ask me to have a look and remove a Plexiglas plate someone had installed for some reason adding also the missing bank of 100pf capacitors.

He new nothing of its former owners, simply he wanted to be in original state rather this mistreated one.

He was wrong as it proved. The ATU wasn't mistreated but heavily vandalised.

Some one had try to make it working as Tee rather than the original Pi/L network and a lot of interconnecting wires were missing.

Easy to cut, difficult to replace and solder. 

I ordered from the Eastern Market the missing caps and load meself with tones of patience. Internet was my help the whole time with photos and useful articles.

Step by step I disassembly it by 95% being cautious not to made a bigger damage. Luckily enough there weren't  any unnecessary wholes made at the fascia or anywhere else so cosmetically it was going to fine.

And went!

It took me some time to figure what to unscrew and how in order not to make any damage and then  widen a bit the holes to pass the bolts of the new capacitor bank being different #number that the one already punched. Small stuff of great care.

Eventually everything fell in position, nothing went missing or surplus apart of a few bolts that the former owner had used for his mod. 

So another project came to a glorious end.

Ουδείς άσφαλτος!

When I bought my Collins 30L-1 years ago, I was living in London and I didn't had the means nor the Hi-Power ATU to test it on the air. All I could do was to check that it was producing power and the HV indication was full scale. After the restoration of the PS board and some minor repairs I put it next to my TS-830s to alight the Aether! I load my rig as I supposed to and started to Tune and Load my Collins. Something was wrong from beginning. The output power was low and the pair of 6146B's was drawing a lot of current. Fiddling with the knobs and buttons I saw the panel light flicker and I smell the “magic smoke”. Due to excessive current draw I had crack open two of the four 20 Ohm resistors at the final board. The reason for that is that the tuned input of the Collins are a bit out of resonance and it shows mismatch and higher than normal SWR. Unlucky their value is a special one so to replace them exactly I have to connect in parallel one 22 Ohm and one 220 Ohm resistor. I have the resistors now and I will replace all four of them next time I will go back to my holiday home.

Η Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα ήταν πραγματικά “μεγάλη”!

Σε πρώτη φάση το TS-830 έδειξε να συνεργάζεται άψογα με τον Collins. Μετά ξεκίνησε το πρόβλημα. Η είσοδος του ενισχυτή και η Σύνθετη Αντίσταση δεν ήταν 50 Ωμ αλλά κάτι παραπλήσιο. Αυτό είχε σαν αποτέλεσμα το μηχάνημα να βλέπει δυσπροσαρμογή και αυτή με την σειρά της να τινάζει στον αέρα τον συντονισμό των 6146. Κάποια στιγμή που θέλησα να τα δώσω όλα στο ενισχυτή μεταβάλλοντας ταυτόχρονα τον συντονισμό της κεραίας.

Με τους ανεμιστήρες να δουλεύουν στο φουλ, την αδρεναλίνη στο κόκκινο από την αυξανόμενη ισχύ, κατάλαβα ότι κάτι δεν πήγαινε καλά δευτερόλεπτα προτού μυρίσω τον μαγικό καπνό. Κατέβασα διακόπτες αμέσως και αφού κρυώσαμε όλοι μαζί, άρχισα να ψάχνω την βλάβη. Αυτό που βλέπετε στην φωτογραφία δεν το περίμενα. Όπως δεν περίμενα ότι η αντίσταση με την τιμή των 20 Ωμ είναι κατά παραγγελία του εργοστασίου! Τεσπά το πρόβλημα αυτό λύθηκε με την παραλληλία δύο αντιστάσεων με τιμές 22 Ωμ και 220 Ωμ. Νέα τιμή 20 Ωμ ακριβώς! Αυτό που μένει είναι να αντικαταστήσω και τις τέσσερις φυσικά . Δεν το έκανα όσο είμαστε κάτω στο /A, γιατί μετά είχαμε άλλα.

Ode to Joy or otherwise upgrading my Collins 30L-1

In view of the forthcoming permanent move to Kalamata, I have begun to restore or improve the radios that will be used in the shack. After the TS-830s next in line was the JEWEL of my collection.

So far I have changed the boards of rectification and filtering circuits of high voltage with a K6HM HV diode filter board. 

I purchased it before many years to install it sometime. Well, this "sometime" came now! Using the electronics lab of my business partner (I stress, business!) Tolis SV1EDY, I've started doing it. A few nights ago, I installed the high voltage Board, since, as you can see in the pictures the old had visible problems. The stand-off pillars are hollow and the bolts are passing all the way to the underchassis. Notice the star washer at the lower right one!
I lit it, saw voltages and shine off. 

HV no load = 1920 VDC
HV load = 1830 VDC
Bias voltage no load = -170 VDC
Bias voltage load = -120 VDC
No bang! 
Last night I changed the pull-down resistance of the antenna relay and did some voltage measurements. Full report of the proceedings will be given at the end of the project. Until then I invite you to rejoice with me!

Εν όψη της επικείμενης μόνιμης μετακόμισής μου στην Καλαμάτα, έχω αρχίσει να αποκαθιστώ ή και να βελτιώνω τα μηχανήματα τα οποία θα χρησιμοποιηθούν στο shack. Μετά το TS-830s σειρά έχει το ΚΟΣΜΗΜΑ της συλλογής μου. 
Ο ενισχυτής Collins 30L-1!
Μέχρι στιγμής του έχω αλλάξει τις πλακέτες των κυκλωμάτων ανόρθωσης και φιλτραρίσματος της υψηλής τάσης με μία πλακέτα κατασκευής του K6HM. Την αγόρασα πρίν πολλά χρόνια για να την εγκαθιστούσα κάποια στιγμή. Ε, αυτή η "κάποια στιγμή" ήρθε τώρα. Χρησιμοποιώντας το εργαστήριο του εμπορικού συνεργάτη μου(το τονίζω, εμπορικού!) Τόλη SV1EDY,έχω ξεκινήσει.

Μερικές νύχτες πριν, εγκατέστησα την πλακέτα Υψηλής Τάσης δεδομένου ότι, όπως μπορείτε να δείτε στις φωτογραφίες, η παλιά, είχε εμφανή προβλήματα.

 Τον άναψα, μέτρησα τις τάσεις και τον έκλεισα.

Κανένα ΜΠΑΜ!
Χτες βράδυ άλλαξα την pull-down αντίσταση του ρελέ της κεραίας κι έκανα μερικές μετρήσεις. Πλήρης αναφορά των πεπραγμένων θα δοθεί στο τέλος του όλου εγχειρήματος. Μέχρι τότε σας καλώ να χαρείτε μαζί μου!
